The Isolation Mixtape - Vol. 2

Blackboard Theatre Collective in collaboration with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra are proud to present The Isolation Mixtape Vol. 2. Off the back of last year’s successful first volume, this year is bigger and better than ever with seven composers, six performers, and an orchestra!

Over a weekend in May we gave our composers a challenge; to write a brand new piece of Kiwi musical theatre. The catch? They only had 72 hours to do it. With mentorship from acclaimed composer Luke Di Somma, our songwriters completed this impossible task which resulted in a stunning new song cycle. A group of emerging orchestrators then worked closely with the CSO to professionally arrange the songs for the full symphony.

The Isolation Mixtape Vol. 2 will now be performed live for the first time on July 30th at The Piano. Join host Jess Brien to hear incredible Kiwi vocalists performing alongside the CSO, and get a rare look at the creative process from video footage taken during the challenge weekend.

Featuring:

Jack Shatford, Georgie Clifford, Reylene Hilaga, Jack Milner-George, Libby Fraser, Emily C. Browning

With music by:

Isaac Shatford, Georgie Clifford, Leea Lamatoa and Bray Jeffrey, Kane Parsons, Fiona Chua, Emily C. Browning

This premiere will celebrate Aotearoa’s hottest young songwriters, and cement Kiwi musical theatre’s place on the world stage.

This project was made possible by the generous funding of Creative New Zealand.

He Says, She Says

Blackboard Theatre Collective is always proud to announce the return of He Says, She Says - get ready for another evening of exceptional entertainment!

Each year we gather a cross section of the Christchurch theatrical community and pull together a fabulous night of entertainment to raise funds for a deserving local organisation. He Says, She Says sees our fabulous cast perform songs originally written for the opposite gender in our annual fundraising extravaganza.

This year we are overwhelmingly excited to announce we will be fundraising for The Piano! They have been instrumental to our growth at BTC but also to so many other local artists. For June and July they offered free venue hire which meant countless Christchurch artists, performing groups and companies could bounce back onto their feet incredibly quickly and we think The Piano needs to be commended, thanked and rewarded for their generosity to our community.

He Says, She Says is one of our crowd favourites, and September 11th is whipping around quick so be sure to book now RIGHT HERE

Isolation Mixtape Challenge PREMIERE

Over a weekend in late June, Blackboard Theatre Collective hosted the Isolation Mixtape Challenge, a 72-hour songwriting challenge where four teams created four new kiwi musical theatre songs. In the weeks since, we have converted these four songs into a studio EP: The Isolation Mixtape.

Blackboard Theatre Collective is proud to announce the premiere of The Isolation Mixtape on July 24th. Half concert, half release party, The Isolation Mixtape Premiere will provide a rare look at the creative processes of our teams over the challenge as well as the first-ever live performances of songs from The Isolation Mixtape.

Free to the public, this premiere is a celebration of Aotearoa’s hottest young songwriters and of a major step towards the development of new musical theatre here in New Zealand. The Premiere will also be live-streamed for those unable to attend in person.

There will be bubbles. There will be bangers.

Tickets are SOLD OUT, but never fear, the event is being livestreamed FOR FREE. Details to follow…

Waiting in the Wings

Ticket information: All tickets $25

Blackboard Theatre Collective presents Waiting in the Wings, a concert of songs and scenes featuring performers whose projects were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Artists and audiences alike were left disheartened after all the recent theatrical cancellations. As the country begins to open back up, we are thrilled to reunite as an artistic community. Theatre is a uniquely social art form and we can’t wait to bring you these remarkable performances, live and in person.

Come enjoy an evening's entertainment comprised of material you would have otherwise missed out on. Featuring 16 performers representing over a dozen different projects, plus the inimitable Richard Marrett on the keys, this is sure to be a concert that was worth the wait.

The Piano is taking all the necessary precautions to keep everyone safe. We’ve just had our seating limit increased to reflect the Level 1 gathering guidelines, but that doesn’t mean you should delay in booking your tickets! Imagine missing out on the cancelled shows and then missing out on your ONLY chance to get snippets of them, that’d be embarrassing…

Tickets are available right here through Eventfinda.
